What is organic food?
The organic food is the development of food production with traditional methods.
These methods have been, during the twentieth century, modified by the use of chemical agents in order to increase production and is now called conventional farming.
In order to consider a product as organic must take into account many points. In the case of agriculture can not use chemicals and seeds should not be transgenic, or without genetic changes. You can only apply natural salts, such as copper or sulfur. Products to remove or repel insect pests and fungi can not be synthetic or artificial chemicals must be of organic origin.
Neither can be added to food artificial additives of any kind.
The resulting plant organic or biological, can be certified by the administration, after passing a series of production and analytical controls.
In livestock antibiotics can not be supplied as a base system for keeping livestock or growth hormones, and they are also given food must come from organic farming.
Fishing, as in other food practices, follow minimum processing methods, products and artificial conditions. Since different countries have requested that the products they are in conformity certificate and have followed the protocols requested. The main countries and organizations such as the EU, USA, Japan and Canada, among others, have certified their own. On 1 January 2009 came into force the new EU rules, included in the Lisbon Treaty for the production, control and labeling of organic products.
In the next part we quote: "Organic production must respect natural systems and cycles ... in rare cases, can afford the resources synthetic chemicals ... these resources are approved and included in the lists in the Annex to Regulation Commission. "1
In Spain, the Autonomous Community has its seal of organic certification, although mandatory labeling should be with the EU. The CCPA is in Catalonia, Catalan Council of Organic Farming. Most countries have some but not all certificate valid for import to other countries.
In the EU can label a product as organic food or if the ingredients have been produced with the corresponding environmental regulations. In the event that the product has Genetically Modified Organisms can only be labeled if they have not been introduced intentionally and have a lower percentage to 0.9% in the product.
The consumption of organic products is highly beneficial for the consumer who has a product without chemicals which endanger health because of them. Because prolonged exposure to chemical pesticides producers, there are between 1 and 5 million poisonings and around 20,000 deaths annually, according to the ONU.2,3
Sometimes some kind of fruit or vegetable biological do not look so attractive as conventional, but what matters is not the look, but the absence of synthetic chemicals and nutrients that provides organic food.
There are products that come from distant places, the lack of local product or production cost, but increased consumption and awareness of consumers, who are increasingly more products to market local biological, so the does have more ecological value by reducing the transport, social and helping the local economy.
Organic food, for weather, you can not cultivate our land, should not be consumed. Good coming out of agricultural cooperatives or fair trade.
